JOB SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Health Promotion and Community Development, or designate, the Coordinator of the Gay Men’s Community Development Program develops and implements HIV prevention, health promotion and community development initiatives targeting gay and bisexual men, including youth, and other men who have sex with men.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

1. Develops, implements and evaluates the Gay Men’s Community Development programs to meet pre-established goals and objectives, including determining methods of operating the program.

2. Identifies and responds to emerging issues in HIV prevention for men who have sex with men; develops innovative education, health promotion and community development programs and opportunities.

3. Provides advocacy and support to men who have sex with men around sexual identity issues, HIV/AIDS and sexual health concerns and community dislocation.

4. Provides outreach to men in public sex environments; provides condoms and lubricant for safer sex practice, updates on the program and relevant health advisories.

5. Consults and develops partnership opportunities with community agencies, clubs, groups and businesses to maximize access to gay and bisexual men for health promotion and HIV prevention purposes as well as identify trends, needs, and priority health issues.

6. Provides input and develops appropriate tools for ongoing assessment of program effectiveness regarding policies, procedures, goals and the ongoing evaluation of the program.

7. Develops and produces targeted HIV prevention education materials for men who have sex with men (MSM), including both health-promotion and harm-reduction materials.

8. Assists in the preparation of the program budget, monitors expenditures, and assists with required financial documentation.

9. Supervises program volunteers by performing duties such as orienting, training, scheduling, monitoring, and providing feedback and support.

10. Maintains files and records related to all areas of the program, electronic and paper monitors and reports on program work on a monthly basis
11. Provides support to the Queer Youth Community Development Worker

12. Performs other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• University degree at bachelor’s level in relevant field (liberal arts, gender studies, gay and lesbian studies or related), or equivalent combination of related experience in outreach, community work or adult education and life experience.
• Solid working understanding of community resources within the gay and lesbian community, HIV/AIDS, homophobia and personal development, safer sex practices and health promotion among men who have sex with men.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
• Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with volunteers, co-workers and community partners.
• Strong workshop presentation skills.
• Strong project management skills.
• Computing skills in using Internet software, relational database management, word processing/desktop design and web management.
• Experience working with men who have sex with men or bisexual men.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Agreement in writing of confidentiality statement;
• Criminal Record Check as per funding requirements;
• Commitment to support the mandate of AIDS Vancouver Island;
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends; including monthly island wide travel,
• Own and maintain reliable vehicle and able to use vehicle in the course of work.
