Joan MacNeil, Secretary

Joan MacNeil is an assistant professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria and is relatively new to Victoria. Her ongoing research focuses on access to health services, issues related to HIV/AIDS and humanistic caring.

Prior to 2006, she spent the past 15 years living and working at understanding and tackling HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and most recently Asia. Her work has focused on research to understand the dynamics of the pandemic, capacity building to respond to what at times are overwhelming care and support needs for individuals, families and communities. She has also been involved in expanding HIV prevention efforts and strengthening clinical services to expand access to anti-retroviral treatment in resource constrained settings.
