Not just surviving, but shining: Gay and queer men to look at health and wellness in Nanaimo

A weekend gathering in Nanaimo on May 28-30 is designed for gay and queer men who want to do more than "just survive." SHINE will bring together men for workshops, social events, hikes, talking and socializing. The event is an initiative of AIDS Vancouver Island and is led by Liam "Captain" Snowdon, a community development coordinator with AVI. It begins Friday May 28 with an evening reception.

People First Radio (CHLY Nanaimo) spoke with Liam "Captain" Snowdon about the upcoming workshop and about his experiences in health promotion and education.

SHINE! A health and wellness gathering for gay and queer men. May 29-31, Nanaimo.

How do we do more than just survive, how do we SHINE! This 3-day gathering will bring together men who have a desire to explore this question.Join us for workshops, socials events, hikes, talking and heart circles and socializing.

Tentative event schedule: Reception on Friday, May 28, with workshops and events Saturday and Sunday. All events are free, but there will be a $25 cost for the reception.

After Stonewall Event Videos

On June 11, 2009, the Men's Wellness Program hosted a film screening and discussion to mark the 40 year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and the beginning of the gay and lesbian liberation movement.
